More and more people today are looking towards getting healthier so it is no surprise that baby boomers are also jumping on the get healthy band wagon. One of the most popular forms of exercise amongst the baby boomers seems to be swimming. This is one of the least strenuous forms of exercise and you can get in a full workout without over working your body.

Most people do not realize all of the benefits that can be obtained from swimming. Swimming and water exercise is the second best form of exercise that has the lowest rate for injuries. Walking is still the leader in that aspect for low injury rates. There are a great many doctors who will recommend that you do water exercises so that you can strengthen your muscles without harming your recovery from illness or injury. Swimming is great physical therapy for people of all ages no matter what their current physical condition is.

Baby boomers like swimming as it allows them to utilize almost all of their major muscle groups at the same time, so that they can get a complete total body workout with minimal strain. The water works as a great form of resistance so that you can use it as strength training and even for aerobic exercises. The baby boomers like water fitness as it can work well for people of all fitness levels. It can help people strengthen their muscles and build up their endurance as well as making them much more flexible.

Many people are not aware that swimming actually provides almost all of the same effects as running does. The difference between running and swimming is that you are not putting a strain on your connective tissues as you do when you are running or doing weight training. Many baby boomers find that swimming allows them to easily maintain the fitness lever or to improve on it as well. You can also do exercise in water more often then you could if you were doing them out of water because the amount of injuries is so low. When you are in water, your body weight is reduced my nearly 90% your movements are 12 times greater then just doing them in the air, therefore you can do much more while in the water.

If you are from the baby boomer era then you will want to look into swimming as a recreational activity. Water fitness such as swimming is safe and it will help you to fill your need for exercise. You can also increase your range of motion with this low impact type of exercise. As with starting any type of new exercise program, you should check with your doctor to be sure that you are doing the right thing. Your doctor can recommend some water exercises that are right for your particular fitness level so that you do not over do it. You can also look into local recreational facilities to see if they offer swimming classes or water fitness classes that you can get in on. Many times you can find a class that is for your age group as well as your fitness level.

Swimming as a sport for baby boomers is a popular pastime as more and more baby boomers near and enter the retirement phase of their lives.

The notion that most old people fear technology is fast becoming an outmoded one, as recent figures reveal that more than half of Britons aged over 50 have access to the internet. Of those, one in five regularly access emails, and use instant messaging, internet phones and social networks to keep in touch with family and friends; figures that match the rest of the population.

Over-50s, or ’silver surfers’ as they are known, spend almost £205 billion a year in the UK, presenting an enormous opportunity for on-line merchants. However, only a few ‘enlightened’ companies even consider older people when marketing on-line, with less than 5% of total online marketing budgets targeted at this age group. That is bound to change soon as on-line retailers catch-on, but in the meantime silver surfers are making the most of what else the internet has to offer.

There is anecdotal evidence that there is a hard-core of retired people who could be classified as ‘early adopters’, due to their eagerness to try out new features online and buy the latest technology. Indeed, many of those have the latest machines and gadgets, including items such as professional standard webcams, so that they can take advantage of free video calls to see as well as talk to their children and grandchildren.

In this day and age when it is much more common for families to live on opposite sides of the world, everyone has much more opportunity to keep in touch with their immediate families, via the internet. Instant messaging has been available for many years, but text based communication is incapable of delivering true emotion or sentiment, resulting in the introduction of a whole new system of graphic emotions using various smiley faces, to which older people tend not to subscribe.

The best form of communication is face-to-face, but when that isn’t possible the next best alternative is video calling; a much better option for people who want to talk and not type. And many of the older ‘early adopters’ have already discovered that as technology is advancing so quickly high-quality images can now be delivered via internet to the opposite side of the world in an instant, allowing them to stay in touch with their loved ones all over the globe. All that is required is that people that wish to communicate with each other via this method have a webcam and the same provider software installed on their PC or laptop.

But, the real beauty of this technology, as many over-50s have already discovered, is that voice and video calls made through the same provider are free. Now, not only can they exchange all their latest news online, they can talk about it for as long as they like safe in the knowledge that it’s not costing them a penny!

Who says that old people can’t adapt to new technology?

Swimming pools, movie stars – no, it’s not lifestyles of the rich and famous, it’s the new face of retirement accommodation in Australia.

For a growing number of retirees, home is a five-star resort with luxury lifestyle toys such as bowling greens, tennis courts, swimming pools, a theater and an in-house restaurant.

There has been a recent explosion in demand for resort-style living for seniors. Accommodation that is exclusive, sophisticated, stylish and modern.

But the question remains: How expensive is it?

Well there are a lot of well-financed baby boomers who are looking to lead a lifestyle in retirement that delivers some immediate rewards.

Exclusive apartments in Sydney city-based retirement resorts have sold for $1.8 million, mid-range city accommodation is priced between $700,000 and $900,000, while resort homes outside the major metropolitan areas often sell for $350,000 to $500,000.

Retirees selling a larger family home in the outer suburbs of Sydney can downsize to a new luxury resort property for about the same cost. While resort-style communities are springing up in the major capital cities, there are a growing number of developments on the coast or in desirable country areas, with the most popular spots being the North Coast of NSW and the southern Queensland coast.

Currently it seems that for retirement lifestyle resorts demand is outstripping supply. The population is aging, retirees are healthier, wealthier and they’re living longer resulting in a large increase in demand.

Another resort lifestyle appeal is the “lock and leave” option. There are plenty of people who want to be able to travel around Australia or overseas, do the grey nomad thing. Retirees don’t want to have to worry about anything while they travel, they want the village to look after the property.

Given the high, ongoing demand for these properties means that strong capital gain is very likely. Previously, retirement villages have offered low-maintenance accommodation in a community setting where the emphasis was on low costs and security, with wheelchair access and medical facilities a highlight. But these new retirement resorts are like living in a luxury hotel.

In a growing trend, retirees are more willing to spend for the now, whereas their parents would have set aside their money for their children’s inheritance. Choosing retirement villages over leaving inheritances, means that your life’s work will pay off and you can live out the sunset years in comfort and style.
